Parking at Reeve, Other Notes

To all: My UW-O contact has informed me that they are starting some road construction on campus this week. See her note below:
Road construction begins this week on the UW-O campus. The construction begins this week on Pearl Avenue by the Student Rec & Wellness Center, but will eventually shut down Algoma Blvd. We do not know where the progress will be by the time of the chess tournament. High & Algoma may or may not be as they are now. High will eventually be 2-way, and Algoma will eventually be blocked.
I spoke with Parking, and they told me guests staying at Gruenhagen and parking in the ramp may be best coming in from Wisconsin Avenue and then turning onto Pearl, then Osceola. For those coming only for the day to Reeve, it may be best for them to park in Lot 34 off of Elmwood Avenue. Lot 15 may or may not be accessible. I have attached a map for reference.

< Folks staying overnight at Gruenhagen and parking a vehicle will still need to purchase a permit via: https://uwosh.aimsparking.com/. Click on: Purchase a Permit

Please note that their parking system does not issue a printable permit but rather stores your vehicle information in their system.
Just a reminder that the advertised mask wearing mandate is in effect. This applies to all contracted and public areas of Reeve Union and Gruenhagen Conference Center. For those schools that rent team rooms at Reeve or Gruenhagen or lodging rooms at Gruenhagen, they may set their own rules for those rooms. Similar to what US Chess has on their websites for nationals If you are unable or unwilling to comply, do not attend.
Entries may be viewed here on the right side of this blog page. Check there to see if I have your registration received and processed. Check the spelling of your player’s names as well.
The Early Bird registration deadline has passed but of course you can still register.
If snail mailing your entry, please use the entry form on page 5 of the flyer and mail the form with a check to the address at the top of that page. Make sure I get the snail mail entries by Thursday. If you e-mail the entries, please include everything on the entry form. Ideally, use Excel if you have a large team. Online registration for all sections is available at https://www.kingregistration.com/tournaments then scroll down to the Wisconsin Chess Association section. Note the separate links for the varsity section and the three individual sections: K-5, K-8 and JV (K-12).
When entering the tournament remember to include US Chess ID’s and ratings for your players who have a US Chess ID. The March supplement is available online. Go to http://www.uschess.org/datapage/player-search.php and enter the player’s name.
FRIDAY NIGHT REGISTRATION: For anyone arriving Friday night, please take care of any registration changes, updates or payments Friday night. I’ll be in the Conference Room on the main level of Gruenhagen after I’ve set up the other rooms. This room is located near the Library Room.

SATURDAY MORNING REGISTRATION: All Saturday morning entries and changes will need to be made at Reeve Union Room 221 which is the vendor/TD Backroom. In order to start on time, please make every effort to arrive by 8:30 am in the event there are changes or additions to your roster. If you just need to make a payment, you may wait until after the first round starts.

Remember also that if you plan to stay at Gruenhagen Conference Center to make your reservations by calling 920-424-1106. There is a Friday, March 11 cutoff for reservations to guarantee that your team will stay together on the same floor. After that time, GCC will make their best attempt to accommodate your request. Gruenhagen started charging a 10% city room tax atop the $40 room rate. If you are entering from a school, you’ll need to bring a sales tax exemption certificate along with you to avoid paying this tax.

Reeve Union reports that the MarketPlace on the first floor will have their Sub Connection open at 8:30 am- 1:30 pm both days. Their Pizza Hut will be open 11 am – 1:30 pm both days.

Their Titan Underground (TUG) in the lower level of Reeve will be open 10 am – 2 pm both days. The TUG has limited food options but has TV’s and game tables for between round recreation.

The Corner Convenience Store will be open during the hours of 9 am – 3 pm each day.

For information on the Saturday night bughouse tournament see https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wn2ZyYme3KpL811bHCdMRF5jpHeZv6Ms5TKOJMLkwoQ/edit?usp=sharing.

Note that the bughouse event is run by Mr. Fay of Waupaca HS. The main event’s tournament directors do not know anything about this side event.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Mike

State Tournament (Hopefully) Resumes March 2022!

The message below is from Mike Nietman:

"Per UW-Oshkosh mandates, masks must be worn inside all university buildings. They will also be a parking charge for overnight parking. See the flyer for details and a link to pre-pay. You’ll need the license plate of the vehicle you bring. So obtain that first if bringing a school vehicle.
We will be back at Reeve Union again this year. The K-5 and K-8 playing room will be room 202. The Varsity and JV will be in the ballroom. Team rooms are available in Reeve Union. See below and the flyer for whom to contact for those. There is also an open sitting area on the second floor in the front of the building as well. In addition the cafeteria seating area on the lower level will be open to us.
The TD backroom is in room 221. Wallcharts and standings for all sections will be placed in that room. At this time Luke Ludwig will not be vending at the event.
Varsity teams need to read the flyer carefully as many changes that were agreed upon at the 2019 coach’s meeting are taking place. First there is only one section so you don’t need to declare to move up a division. All teams will be eligible to win the title and travelling trophy. Teams will be divided into three divisions based on team rating for prize purposes (not for pairing). Also, the first two rounds will use accelerated pairings. (The strangest part of that is that there will be some first round winners playing first round losers in the second round.)
I have available the online registration system used by the WCA. The link is www.kingregistration.com/tournaments There will be one site for the individual JV, K-8 and K-5 sections and another site for the varsity if we can get it to work properly. I will accept e-mail and snail mail entries as usual. For snail mail entries, please use the entry form on page 5 of the flyer and mail the form with a check to the address at the top of that page. If you e-mail the entries, please include everything on the entry form. Use Excel if you have a large team. Entries will be posted on the wischolasticchesschampionship.blogspot.com starting about a month before the event. That site has the some of the more modern history of the event including several crosstables of past events. To check US Chess ratings go to http://www.uschess.org/datapage/player-search.php.
Please use the entry form. If you use other forms (e.g. Excel), please include ALL items from the entry form including US Chess ID numbers and ratings if your players have one. If written on paper, please write legibly.
A limited number of team rooms are available at both Reeve Union and Gruenhagen Conference Center. Please contact Reeve Reservations at 920-424-2435 or reevereserve@usosh.edu for team rooms there. For team rooms at Gruenhagen contact Sarah Martin Kriha at 920-424-1121.
Lodging is available at Gruenhagen Conference Center. Please call 920-424-1106 to make reservations. Lodging room checks need to be made out to UW-Oshkosh. Details are on the flyer. Note that room rates are $40 + 10% room tax this year.
Waupaca High School is running the bughouse event Saturday night in the varsity playing room. Details are on the flyer. Note that neither I nor my TD’s have any additional information on this event. There is a link on the flyer for more information and I also include it here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wn2ZyYme3KpL811bHCdMRF5jpHeZv6Ms5TKOJMLkwoQ/edit?usp=sharing.
Note also there will not be any Friday night activities this year. Also, I am not planning on having a master simul Saturday night.
Let me know if you have any questions.
We’ll see you in Oshkosh!
Thanks,
Mike Nietman

STATE SCHOLASTIC 2020 CANCELED

Wisconsin State Scholastic tournament has been canceled- see email from Mike Nietman below:

All,

Below are snippets of an e-mail from UW-Oshkosh cancelling all events on campus including the 2020 State Scholastic Championship until further notice.  If the virus abates by May or June we may try to hold an event but only time will tell.  For now, I plan on issuing refunds for entries.

If you snail mailed me a check, let me know if you need it returned or if I should just shred it.

If you registered online, I will need to send you a check.  However, the site charges me $1 per entry and a credit card processing fee.  I will probably be sending you the difference, which is what I receive from them.  This may take a week or two to work thru the process.  Please be patient.

If you reserved lodging at Gruenhagen, they will cancel the reservation without penalty and they will contact you to confirm.

If you booked a team room at Reeve Union and paid a deposit, it will be refunded by UW-O.

If you have a question, please let me know otherwise I’d appreciate it if my in box cooled down for a bit.  J

In talking with my contact at Gruenhagen, if the virus abates in a month or so, we may consider holding an event or two in May or June.  One idea would be to hold the varsity competition on one weekend and the K-5/K-8 on another.  If so, I may be able to hold both in Gruenhagen for instance.

If not, we’ll hold the trophies until 2021.

If anyone has already signed up or is planning on signing up for nationals, please pay attention to the event’s website for updates.  There will most likely be some changes.

Please note that this is going out to my scholastic e-mail list.  I will need to send out a second wave later tonight catching all that have registered that may not be on this list already.  Sorry for the duplicate e-mails.

Stay healthy!

Mike

Dear University community,
Thank you for your patience and for staying up to date while public health, safety and other UW Oshkosh leaders and I made several important decisions regarding university operations and instruction in light of the continuing concerns about COVID-19.
Today, I am announcing that all campus-based classes on our Fond du Lac, Fox Cities and Oshkosh campuses will be canceled for the week of March 16. We will begin delivery of courses through alternative delivery methods on Monday, March 30. All online classes currently in session are not impacted by this decision.
Events
All UWO sponsored events and those events held on our campuses are canceled immediately until further notice. We ask that you consider your health and the health of those around you when thinking about attendance at any group event.

2019 Results are In

Another great state tournament is in the record books.  Results are on the right.  Kudos to Mike Nietman and all those awesome TDs, score keepers and helpers who made it happen.
