Rule Change Proposals

To all:

See to the right, the link for "Rule Change Proposal" for a proposal on some major changes to the State Scholastic.  These will be discussed at the Coach’s and Parent’s Meeting starting about 1:20 pm in room 221.  Note that if passed, these would take effect for next year’s tournament.  If they come to a vote, each participating school has one vote.  If you have questions, feel free to contact Alex Betaneli.

Remember that the first entry fee deadline is this Saturday.  Please send me your rosters by then in order to get the lowest entry fee.  The next deadline is noon Friday, March 22.  Any entries received after that will not be shown on the printouts I’ll have Friday night or Saturday morning and incur the at site entry fee.

Call Gruenhagen by Friday, March 15 in order to reserve your lodging rooms.  920-424-1106.

To see if I received your entry, click on ‘Entries so far’ on the right side of this website.  The flyer is also there as well as all of the past results (since 1993!).

Thanks,

Mike

Mike's update 2/25

To all:

Prospective Division 1 teams:  See note below!

Entries are starting to come in for the 2019 Wisconsin State Scholastic Chess Championships March 23-24 at the Reeve Memorial Student Union on the UW-Oshkosh campus.

With great thanks to Mark Seghers, he has created a website dedicated to the event!  Please check it out at http://wischolasticchesschampionship.blogspot.com/.  I provided the results going back to 1993!  The flyer for the current year and the entries are posted on that site.  Check there to see if I have your registration received and processed.  The entry form is page 5 of the flyer.

Please use the entry form on page 5 of the flyer and mail the form with a check to the address at the top of that page.  If you e-mail the entries, please include everything on the entry form.  Ideally, use Excel if you have a large team.  Online registration for the JV, K-8 and K-5 sections is available at https://onlineregistration.cc/ then scroll down to the Wisconsin Chess Association section.

Reeve Union reports that the MarketPlace on the first floor will have their Sub Connection open at 8:30 am- 1:30 pm both days.  Their Pizza Hut will be open 11 am – 1:30 pm both days.

Their Titan Underground (TUG) in the lower level of Reeve will be open 8 am – 2 pm both days.  The TUG has limited food options but has TV’s and game tables for between round recreation.

University Books & More and the Corner Convenience Store will be open the weekend. These are their hours:

Convenience Store
Saturday 3/23: 11:00 am - 5:00 pm
Sunday 3/24: 10:00 am - 4:00 pm

Bookstore
Saturday 3/23: 12:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Sunday 3/24: closed

When entering the tournament remember to include US Chess ID’s and ratings for your players who have a US Chess ID.  The March supplement is available online.  Go to http://www.uschess.org/datapage/player-search.php and enter the player’s name.  After hitting find select the name then the ‘Rtg. Supp.’ tab.

Varsity teams remember that if you want to be placed no lower than a certain division to please circle that on the entry form.  You cannot opt to play directly in Division 3.  If your team rating is low enough, you will be assigned to Division 3 unless you opt to play up.

FRIDAY NIGHT REGISTRATION:  For anyone arriving Friday night, please take care of any registration changes, updates or payments Friday night.  I’ll be in the Conference Room on the main level of Gruenhagen after I’ve set up the other rooms.  This room is located near the Library Room.

SATURDAY MORNING REGISTRATION:  All Saturday morning entries and changes will need to be made at Reeve Union Room 221 which is the vendor/TD Backroom.  In order to start on time, please make every effort to arrive by 8:30 am in the event there are changes or additions to your roster.

Remember also that if you plan to stay at Gruenhagen Conference Center to make your reservations by calling 920-424-1106.  There is a Friday, March 15 cutoff for reservations to guarantee that your team will stay together on the same floor.   After that time, GCC will make their best attempt to accommodate your request.

For information on the Saturday night bughouse tournament see https://docs.google.com/document/d/1wn2ZyYme3KpL811bHCdMRF5jpHeZv6Ms5TKOJMLkwoQ/edit?usp=sharing.

Note that the bughouse event is run by Mr. Fay of Waupaca HS.  The main event’s tournament directors do not know anything about this side event.

There will be no organized activities Friday night or a simultaneous exhibition Saturday night.

Prospective Division 1 Teams:  I failed to include on the flyer a team tie break change approved by the coaches at last year’s coach’s meeting.  If at the end of five rounds there is a tie for first based on match points, a speed chess playoff will start immediately after all games in the varsity section are complete.  The playoff will consist of a 5 on 5 40 point match with a time control of 3 minutes each plus a 2 second increment per move.  If that match is tied at 20-20, then a single board Armageddon game will be played by a single representative of each team with the team having the best tiebreaks selecting white (6 minutes) or black (4 minutes with draw odds).

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Mike

3/23 WCA Update from Mike

Dear Wisconsin Chessplayers:

1)      The WCA is pleased to announce that we are now participating in online registration for our tournaments and several other state clubs will be allowed to use our portal for their events as well.  The first event will be the Hales Corners Challenge XXVII (flyer attached and below) then the Arpad Elo Open (flyer attached – see note below) then the State G/60 in May.  Click on the links below or in the flyers to sign up online for these events.

2)      Good luck to Wisconsin’s own GM Awonder Liang in the US Championships that start April 17 in St. Louis.  Watch all the action live on www.uschesschamps.com.  Awonder was featured on the local news.  See the story at http://www.wkow.com/story/37781172/2018/03/21/madisons-liang-to-compete-in-us-chess-championship.

3)      For anyone who is interested in voting in the US Chess Executive Board elections this June, you need to be a registered voter.  If you’ve registered in the past, you don’t need to register again.  If you are not registered, you need to go to your MSA page starting at http://www.uschess.org/datapage/player-search.php.  Type in your ID or name and then scroll down to near the bottom to where it says ‘Voting Member Status’.  If it says “Eligible to be a Voting Member, but not registered to Vote.”  Click on the ‘Voter Registration’ link to register to vote.  The ballot will be snail mailed in early June.  I have two years remaining on my last term as I’m term limited at the end of this term.

Thanks,

Mike

Welcome!

With the approval and assistance of Mike Nietman, I created this website as a way for Wisconsin parents and coaches to see all information related to the Wisconsin Scholastic State Chess Championship, held in March of the year at UW-Oshkosh.
I hope you find it useful - please let me know if you have suggestions to improve the site.  Thanks!
